What Are Our Borrowers Reading?

Freedom's Land by Anna Jacobs

Reviewed by Nola

''I am sure I am meant to live in the early part of the 20th Century as I really enjoy reading stories from that era and in the Australian outback. Although this is a love story it portrays so much about the hardships of return service men, particularly those from England who came to Australia in the hope of a better life through the Western Australian Government Scheme.

Andrew Boyd, his new 2nd wife Norah and their 3 children set off from England with high hopes of a better life on their own farm in Australia.  When they arrive they find there is only barren land, no house and no farm animals.  Through much hard work all the people involved in this scheme band together and finally build makeshift humpies to live in whilst they wait for farm animals to arrive and then eventually build their homes. Along the way they encounter unexpected deaths, illness and bush fires. This only makes them more determined to succeed in their new country.

A very easy story to read and very descriptive of the early 20th century and our wonderful Australian bush."

The Widow by Fiona Barton

Reviewed by Nicole

"The Widow is a great psychological thriller that kept me thinking and guessing from start to finish. It centres on emotional abuse and manipulation in a marriage and the internal suffering that a wife will go through to protect her husband from the accusations of child abduction.

I couldn’t put this book down.
Highly recommended!"
