People Experiencing Homelessness

Everyone is Welcome at Shoalhaven Libraries

Inclusive Spaces
Shoalhaven Libraries warmly welcome people experiencing homelessness or living in temporary accommodation. Our libraries are safe, supportive spaces where you can relax and take part in activities.

Stay as Long as You Need
You’re welcome to spend time in our libraries during opening hours. We simply ask that everyone follows the same guidelines that apply to all visitors.
If you need to rest, you’re welcome to find a quiet spot in the library.

Access Our Resources
While you’re here, you can browse our collections, read newspapers, or use our computers and free internet.
All libraries have public toilets available, though please note we don’t have shower facilities.

Doing it Tough

Pick up a Doing it Tough booklet from our libraries to find support and services near you.

Join the Library

If you do not have a permanent address, you can still join the library. Visit any library for details and to sign up.
Membership is subject to our standard terms and conditions.

  • Wonderbooks – Rechargeable read-along books for children to help build reading skills.
  • Hi-Lo Collection – Engaging, age-appropriate content written at a lower reading level to build confidence for struggling readers of all ages.

Shoalhaven Libraries offer a variety of sensory items for in-library use. These items include fidget toys, calming toys, weighted items, and ear defenders. Please note that the available items may vary between library branches.

Nowra Library is equipped with adaptive PC desks designed for sit/stand or wheelchair use, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all patrons.

Planning a Quiet Visit to the Library

We understand that some members of our community prefer a calmer environment when visiting the library. To help you plan your visit:

  • Check our What's On page for program schedules. Children’s activities can make the library lively so it’s helpful to know when these are happening.
  • Morning is our busiest time. If you’d like a quieter experience, consider visiting from lunchtime through mid-afternoon, when things tend to be more relaxed.

Our goal is to make the library welcoming for everyone, so we encourage you to plan ahead for the experience that suits you best.
