Shoalhaven Libraries are thrilled to support the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, running from October 20–26, and we’re inviting everyone in the community to get involved!

This fantastic citizen science project invites Australians to spend just 20 minutes observing and recording the birds in their backyard, local park, or even from a balcony. Using the Bird Count app or website, your sightings help BirdLife Australia track bird populations and protect our native species.

We’re especially excited to celebrate the Tawny Frogmouth, recently crowned Australian Bird of the Year 2025! Known for its incredible camouflage and quirky charm, the Tawny Frogmouth’s win highlights the importance of protecting even our most familiar backyard birds.

To help you get ready, Shoalhaven Libraries have a range of resources and events:

  • A great selection of Australian bird field guides and birdwatching books to help you identify local species.
  • Access to Storybox Library, featuring a beautiful online collection of bird-themed storybooks read aloud by Australian storytellers—perfect for families and young nature lovers.
  • A special talk at Nowra Library by BirdLife Shoalhaven, where you’ll learn how to use the Bird Count app and identify common backyard birds.

Whether you're a birdwatching beginner or a seasoned spotter, we’d love to see you take part. Every bird counts!
